The Register of Geographical Names is a basic and public register of geographical names of inhabited places and spatial features with data on their geospatial location, classification and other attributes. It is aligned with the resolutions adopted within the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) and the INSPIRE Directive.
The Register of Geographical Names is a national register of toponyms that are in official use in the Republic of Serbia, both in the Serbian language and in the languages of national minorities (for populated places in those local government units where this is provided for by law). As the Register of Geographical Names is a reference base, all natural and legal persons, when using geographical names in official correspondence and electronic and printed publications containing the names of spatial features, are obliged to use exactly the names listed in the Register of Geographical Names.
The Register of Geographical Names contains the following information:
The Register of Geographical Names contains the names of settlements, administrative units, buildings, hydrographic features, traffic objects, landforms, landscapes and features, land cover features, protected areas and other spatial features.

The Register of Geographical Names is used by the Commission for the Standardization of Geographical Names of the Government of the Republic of Serbia in the process of standardization of toponyms.
The data is stored and maintained in the MS Access database, updated as needed, and the data is available for download in *.txt and Shapefile formats.
